Spanish filter
Twitter needs a filter for Spanish. ‘Cause it would be a lot easier to filter out that yiddish that fills the trending topics than for me to learn the language.
A big F-U to mobile carriers' text messaging! →
Thank you, Apple, for iMessage. Now I can send text and multiple messages using my current data plan without needing a text message plan!
I loathe the idea that I should pay for text messaging on mobile phones. The fact is a text message is just data. In fact it’s just 160 bytes of data. Do the math for your text messaging plan, and you’ll find you’re paying up to $1300 per...
Pet Peeve of the Day: portrait-oriented videos
Damn it, people! Turn your frickin’ phone on its side when you take videos! I’m not messing around here. If one of you dip shits takes another vertical video cause you’re too lazy or ignorant to turn the damn phone sideways, I’m gonna go postal! Cut it out!

Apparently kids are only important for a few days
Facebook trends are like the weather in the Midwest. Some people like it, others hate it, most think its better somewhere else but everyone still stays…. And of course it changes in a moments notice.
Take the recent post a cartoon as your profile picture trend that supposedly was in support of anti-violence against kids. I never saw anyone ask for money or to do anything, so I’m...

Bad decision
I’ve got a friend that got married and decided she needed to take his last name. Bad decision! When the person you marry has a last name that simply sounds bad and is offensive if heard out of context, you skip it! I don’t care how traditional you think you are, you need to step up to the 21st century and take a pass on that last name.
… if only because I can’t stand...

This can’t happen too soon. An end to completely random ringtones that I know people actually paid way too much for? This must happen!

Tracking “Christmas friendly” retailers is about as Christian as tracking “Communist sympathizers” in the 50s was American.

Make it an adventure
Roz Savage is an amazing modern adventurer. Check her out at www.rozsavage.com. And here’s a quote she shared:
An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is an adventure wrongly considered. (GK Chesterton)
RT something original for a change
So how is it that retweeting is so cool but we all hate the person who forwards us junk mail? When did retweeting something someone else found—and didn’t even create themselves—become so cool? That’s like citing the librarian in your dissertation who helped you locate the critical data to support your research rather than the actual author.

Sinners can always repent but stupid is forever.
– frankschmidt (from a comment on The Chronicle of Higher Education on a story about a student who streaked a half-time show—second time after doing so in high school, and a number of other alcohol-related infractions; clearly a slow learner)

Growl? I’ll growl for you.
If another app requests to install Growl, “I will cut you!” I can’t think of a more annoying, pestering, cluster-inducing piece of crapware for the Mac.

What's the McDistance? →
If you didn’t already know that McDonald’s are nearly omnipresent, this article will show you just how pervasive they are. Gets me to wondering what a Starbucks map would look like. Probably not too many in rural areas, but vaporizingly hot might describe the heat map for cities.
Announcing the new Captain Blow Hard: Steve Balmer
Market share rounding errors. Macs are more expensive. The iPhone has no chance of gaining market share.
Steve Ballmer really seems to believe this stuff! It’s kind of cute how he takes a page out of Karl Rove’s math book—and we know that Karl has THE math. Too bad that reality proved Karl wrong and is doing the same of Stevey B, too.
Nine Workspaces Where Famous Folks Get Stuff Done... →
Some great inspiration for workspace design, and a nice insight that my workspace isn’t really that cluttered after all!
Facebook has gotten a less interesting since cycling season ended. Now it’s just old high school friends and football fiends posting all sorts of randomness I could care less about. What happened to the just as useless but way more interesting updates and pictures from the races?
Now that's retarded
I understand the dislike of the word retarded. Some would like to banish it from our vocabulary, but I’m not one of them. I find it offensive and don’t use the term to refer to people with mental disabilities. In my experience, people who have mental disabilities are some of the nicest, well-meaning, hardest working individuals, and they consistently do and achieve more than is...
Why do I get a silly sense of satisfaction when I come back early during lunch and find one of those cherry parking spots near the building vacated? Does the fact that it’s available because one of those people that gets to work at 7:00 a.m. left it open make my enjoyment some sort of sadism?

Crazy Fun!
I’ve agreed with myself to avoid a self-imposed death sentence by not ever owning a sport motorcycle. (It’s just too tempting to ride it like a racing bicycle, only with infinitely greater amounts of power!) But that doesn’t mean that I can’t enjoy the craziness that is motorcycle racing. As if track races didn’t look scary enough, it was fun to find out about...

Half-way there?
Treatment of Alan Turing was “appalling” - British Prime Minister
The math might be a bit fuzzy, but half-way is a decent guess. It’s totally unconscionable what Turing was put through for being gay after his amazing contributions to fighting the Nazis in WWII and being a pioneer of computer science. Will we look back in another 50+ years and think our treatment of gays was similarly as...

Grrrr! Missing features
The Genius Mixes in iTunes 9 are nice, but there’s no way to see what’s in the “playlist” and there’s no way to rate the tracks that are playing—even with external apps that normally help do this.

Got Genius Mixes to show up in iTunes 9 finally. Had to manually update Genius (Store > Update Genius) and when it finished updating, it just appeared: voila!

Obama addressed the kids yesterday about staying in school and working hard. There didn’t appear to be any calls for allegiance or propositions for socialism. In fact, the focus seemed to be on personal responsibility and hard work, values of a meritocracy, or (dare I say) capitalist democracy. Is there any chance that the pre-speech nay-sayers wishing to prevent young ears from exposure to...

Forearm Forklift -- Lifting Straps! →
Yes, an “As Seen on TV” product that actually works. And the only one I’ve ever bought. Two scrawny guys carried a piano into the house simply using these straps. Didn’t make it any lighter but made moving the piano much more manageable.

No Cats Day 9.9.09: It can’t come soon enough.
The video speaks for itself. But if you need more, see Wired.
It’s so sad that the political paranoia level is so high that parents don’t want to let their kids watch a presidential address about education directed to kids at the start of the school year. I have vigorously disagreed with some of our presidents, but I can’t think of a president during my lifetime who would try to “indoctrinate” kids during a speech on education...
Date Senior Women - yippee!
Why in hell would Facebook show me the ad “Date Senior Women”? It already knows my age and that I’m attached. Can’t it figure out from that and my complete lack of women over 40 who are friends that this probably isn’t my life goal? Or does it know something that I haven’t admitted to myself yet? (Huuughh! I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.)
Making it worse
The neighbor “aerated” his lawn again this summer. It still just looks like a huge pack of little, yappy dogs crapped all over the yard. And this makes his patchy, weedy lawn look better how?
