I understand the dislike of the word retarded. Some would like to banish it from our vocabulary, but I’m not one of them. I find it offensive and don’t use the term to refer to people with mental disabilities. In my experience, people who have mental disabilities are some of the nicest, well-meaning, hardest working individuals, and they consistently do and achieve more than is expected of them.
And that’s the crux of the question for me: living up to expectations. People who continually do their best are far from retarded. But people who know better—no matter what their gifts or challenges—are retarded. Case in point: the burglar who checked his Facebook account on a computer in the house he was burglarizing and left himself logged in. That’s retarded!
